The first factor to consider is whether you actually have dry itchy scalp or a more serious condition such as dandruff or psoriasis. Both these conditions will result in an itchy scalp as well as dry flakes but require different types of treatment.

If you have any inflamed bumps or nodules on the scalp, it is more likely that the cause of your dry scalp is serious. Abnormal hair loss can also be associated with dandruff or psoriasis. You can also ask your doctor what the best route of treatment is to sort the problem out as quickly as possible.

Once you have eliminated the more serious causes of this condition, you can take a number of different steps to improve the condition of your scalp.

Assess the environment that you are spending most of your time in. Do you live in a dry climate or spend most of your time with an air-conditioner blowing? Dry air in your environment can cause this condition, and the simple addition of a humidifier can help relieve these systems.

On the other hand, hot and humid conditions can also be the cause of this problem. Constant or extreme perspiration can cause a build-up of dead skin cells to shed more excessively. Washing your hair regularly followed by a scalp care conditioner will alleviate the symptoms.

The type of shampoo and conditioner that you are using can contribute to a dry itchy scalp. Harsh chemicals are often included in the formulation of this hair cleaning substances that dry out the scalp. Rather purchase a natural shampoo or conditioner that is aimed at eliminating dry scalp.

Scalp massage will stimulate the natural oil production in the skin on the head. You can have a scalp massage at your local salon or purchase a scalp massaging unit at a local chain store. Scalp massage units can be manual, mechanical or electronic.
