Major Causes – Dehydration

Problems with dry flaky skin on the face are often a result of mild to severe dehydration. Dehydration of the skin may be the result of weather conditions such as extreme cold, rainfall, or low air humidity. Prolonged exposure to winter cold is among the largest contributors to dry flaky skin under eyes. Other causes are nutrient deficiencies from a poor diet and lack of vitamin A, B, and C; and excessive consumption of caffeine and sugar.

Cosmetic products, creams, and other products are not exempt as possible causes of this condition, and unless used in moderation, can, in fact, be prominent causes of dehydration within the skin.

In addition to dehydration, certain medical issues affect the skin, as well.

Medical Issues

Medical issues such as hormonal imbalance and an under-active thyroid gland, as well as ailments such as psoriasis and diabetes also lead to dry itchy skin.

Consulting a licensed dermatologist is best in situations of this nature. Custom skincare routines can be provided to implement on a daily basis.

Aside from the conditions mentioned above, dry skin patches on the face can also appear as a result of a condition known as atopic dermatitis.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis, characterized by the appearance of moisture lessness, especially around the eyes, is another culprit. In its advanced stages, this condition is known to be accompanied by rashes.

While the skin on the face is the main area targeted by this condition, the arms, wrists, knees, and ankles are not immune, and are normally plagued with major discomfort from inflammation. Individuals plagued with atopic dermatitis are also prone to asthma and allergic reactions.

In addition to atopic dermatitis, red dry facial skin can be brought on by a lack of water.

This condition and severe dryness around the eyes are a result of a lack of water, which can only be replaced through the use of a quality moisturizer. When using moisturizers, it is important to avoid harsh chemicals, which could further dehydrate the epidermis of the skin.

Given the wide selection, choosing the best moisturizer for dry skin on the face can be a challenge. A popular recommendation is to apply the same moisturizers used on babies, seeing as these moisturizers lack the harsh chemicals and, therefore, are gentle on the skin. Vaseline is also recommended replenishing skin suffering from a lack of water. Some of the home remedies for dry skin face masks made with all natural ingredients can hydrate and nutrify the face.

This condition is a common ailment that many individuals struggle with, especially during the harsh winter months.
